Three Weeks to Fifteen: Skyrim Is Busier Than Most Games Half Its Age
Skyrim came out on November 11, 2011. Three weeks before its fifteenth birthday, it is averaging around 24,000 concurrent players on Steam, which puts it above a lot of games released this year. Bethesda has been quiet about any anniversary plans, but The Elder Scrolls Online decided to celebrate on Skyrim’s behalf.
Every big release still gets compared to it. Right now the comparison everyone is drawing is with Grand Theft Auto 6 modding, because Rockstar’s September guidelines take almost the opposite position Bethesda has held since 2011. Skyrim shipped with a Creation Kit and an open invitation, while GTA 6 is shipping on consoles only with rules about what multiplayer mods are allowed to do. Fifteen years of data suggest openness pays off in longevity, and Skyrim is the exhibit.

ESO’s Season Two: Echoes of Skyrim launched on October 22 on PC, Mac and consoles. The season runs through January 27, 2027, and the centerpiece is that Greymoor, the 2020 chapter set in Western Skyrim and Blackreach, is now free for every player. The two Wolfhunter dungeons went free earlier this month, and Markarth, the Reach-based story DLC, follows for free on November 9. Harrowstorms, vampire plots and the Gray Host are all accessible to anyone with the base game now, which is as close to a free Skyrim homecoming as ZeniMax Online could put together.
The other new piece is Solo Dungeons, a first for ESO, with Moon Hunter Keep and March of Sacrifices available to run alone from day one and more content drops promised through January. If you have not touched ESO since the chapter-a-year model ended, this is the clearest jumping-in point in a while, and Western Skyrim remains the best-looking take on the province outside the single-player game.
Skyrim itself
The modding scene is what keeps those 24,000 people around. This week’s standout is a mod that lets you carry a cat for the entire game, which someone promptly used for a full playthrough. There are also fresh Creation Club style packs rotating through, but the real action remains on Nexus, where the Skyrim Special Edition mod count passed anything else on the platform years ago and still grows daily.

What might happen on November 11
Nothing has been announced. The tenth anniversary brought Anniversary Edition, and there are no leaks pointing to anything similar this year. The Elder Scrolls VI remains unannounced beyond its 2018 teaser, so the realistic expectation is a Steam sale, maybe a discount on Anniversary Upgrade, and a lot of birthday threads.
If you want to mark it properly, start a fresh character this week and have them arrive in Whiterun on the 11th. Fifteen years in, that road still works.
