Denizens of Skyrim – Markarth v1.0

Adds new NPCs to Markarth.

So, one thing I always enjoyed about modding games like Oblivion was creating new NPCs. That’s how I first started modding. Creating basic NPCs with basic AI packages to fill in voids in the world. Granted, as I got deeper into modding I was able to make more complex NPCs. NPCs who could sleep, gather things, deliver goods, travel via scripts, execute other NPCs, fight large scale battles, etc etc. It might seem simple to the way more seasoned modders in the community, but to me doing this was revolutionary and fun.

One of the first NPC mods I ever did, but never released, was a crowded cities mod in Chorrol – my favorite city in Oblivion. NPCs had neatly done schedules to make them feel alive. Thieves, snitches, jailbirds, guards, and more! I wanted to return to those roots by doing a whole new mod series, but with the modding knowledge I have now, in a whole different game.

Hence, Denizens of Skyrim.
What this mod does is add 23 new NPCs to Markarth with unique names and schedules to truly make them feel alive (23 seems like a lot, but trust me, it works). From mercenaries and adventurers to scholars and even a new fence! All of this, in the name of making the world seem more alive and crowded.

Below are the list of NPCs I created with a little bit of what they do and how they idle their time away in game.

Stills the Past-Robber
Stills is an avid adventurer who has come to Markarth to explore the Dwarven Ruins beneath the city. He has had much success, even locating a Shellbug and obtaining it’s chitin – which he had turned into a helmet to celebrate his find. Nowadays, though, with the ruin closed off by the city guard, he wanders about the city on the hunt for work to fund his drinking and merriment. He might be willing to join you in your travels if you buy him the next round…

Harard
The headsman of Markarth. On the surface, he’s like any other Nord. Just with an axe. A very big axe. And a hood to conceal his identity. Despite this, he still works with the guard on detaining and arresting criminals and won’t hesitate to run after a thief or someone who’s involving themselves in a certain conspiracy….

Kvenolf
A guard within the Markarth Guard ranks. His job is simple: Keep the supply lines open between the Salvius Farm and Markarth. He intends to do his job, and do it right. He has been given a wardog to make sure this job is done right, too.

Kinveych Vusrudo
A beggar and a Reachman. He isn’t well liked by the Nords of Markarth, but the priestesses, every so often, take pity on him and his plight. Most people think he’s a member of the Forsworn, but really, he’s just a misunderstood soul who’s down on his luck.

Miae Odrav
A local priestess and Reachwoman hiding a terrible, dark secret. She mostly confines herself to the Temple of Dibella during the day and only emerges at night to eat and stretch her legs. What is it about her that makes her such a strong night owl?

Mankur Wind-Scourge
A Companion on dispatch to Markarth, accompanied by his faithful companion – a Husky named “Mjoll”. His job is simple: Locate a Forsworn leader and take them out. Unfortunately, he has no idea where his quarry is located and thus spends most of his time wandering the city, looking for leads on his target. Every now and again he’ll leave the confines of the city to watch the road, but that’ll only get him so far…

Gjukjof
The third child of Kleppr and Frabbi, and by the far the oldest, he helps out at the Inn by chopping firewood by the mines and bringing it up to the Inn. Weekends are his days off, however, and he likes to take advantage of them whenever possible. Some say he has an inappropriate interest in Belwndrae, but no one knows why or if it’s even true.

Belwndrae
A thief and member of the Thieves Guild. A Bosmer by birth, but a Nord at heart, she lives in Markarth and makes her living by keeping tabs on the inhabitants for the Thieves Guild and acting as a fence for its members. Some say Gjukjof and Belwndrae share a connection of some sort, but no one knows if it’s true or not. But what is true is they seem to spend a lot of time together on Wednesdays…

Vittenici Ostarius
A priestess of Dibella and avid practitioner of Her ways. Clad in revealing garments, she wanders the city streets to “bless” the men and women of Markarth. While her methods are considered unorthodox even by her fellow priestess’ standards, they don’t say anything because they know Dibella would approve.

Torodrir Stone-Beard
A Nordic scholar who has taken an extreme interest in the Dwemer ruins beneath the city. Followed at all times by his personal bodyguard, Frornhardt, he can usually be found in Understone Keep – working alongside the Court Wizard and his nephew.

Frornhardt Wild-Champion
Captain of the Mercenary band, “The Dwarven Sabres”. He spends his time protecting Torodrir, and following him wherever he goes.

Njadla
A member of The Dwarven Sabres, she simply guards her post in Understone Keep alongside her comrades.

Hajlnach
A member of The Dwarven Sabres, he simply guards his post in Understone Keep alongside his comrades.

Kasalinus Janagia
A member of The Dwarven Sabres, he simply guards his post in Understone Keep alongside his comrades.

Karsoldr Iron-Nose
A member of The Dwarven Sabres, he simply guards his post in Understone Keep alongside his comrades.

Drahelheim
A member of The Dwarven Sabres, he simply guards his post in Understone Keep alongside his comrades.

Drynvald
A member of The Dwarven Sabres, he simply guards his post in Understone Keep alongside his comrades.

Olmnunn
A sellsword working for Thonor to protect The Treasury House. Having lived in Markarth his entire life, he always found that working for the Silver-Bloods was both profitable and sensible as they paid well and housed their workers. As such, he spends his time guarding The Treasury House from intruders, thieves, and vandals.

Eimrlam the Wanderer
An adventurer who found his way to Markarth. Unlike most other people, his isn’t very sociable and instead spends his time wandering the city and wondering what to do next. A wanderer at heart and by nature, he doesn’t plan to stay in Markarth very long and hopes to pay a visit to High Rock some time soon. He is always accompanied by his loyal hound, Growler.

Kolgrim
A local Nord working at The Treasury House. On the surface, he’s your average Nord who works a 9-5 at the local treasury and really, that’s all he is. He suffers no flights of fancy nor adventurous spirit. He does, however, note that Markarth is a dangerous place to live and thus has invested in two daggers. And he knows how to use them with deadly efficiency.

NOTE: The Prima Guide actually mentions Kolgrim by name, but he does not appear in game or is mentioned by any NPC. I essentially added him because of the mention in the guide.

Toch Amleme
A Reachman working the smelter by the mines. Like the other workers, he’s underpaid and unhappy with his life under the boot of the Orsimer overseer. But there’s naught he can do, really. He needs work, and this is work. The only work that’s afforded to a perceived lowlife such as he.

Eizo Geglom
A Reachwoman working the smelter by the mines. Like the other workers, she’s underpaid and unhappy with her life under the boot of the Orsimer overseer. But there’s naught she can do, really. She needs work, and this is work. The only work that’s afforded to a perceived lowlife such as she.

Gin Ecruse
A Reachman working the smelter by the mines. Like the other workers, he’s underpaid and unhappy with his life under the boot of the Orsimer overseer. But there’s naught he can do, really. He needs work, and this is work. The only work that’s afforded to a perceived lowlife such as he.
